Product Selection Guide for Installers

Residential Lawns & Backyards

For standard residential installs, a mid-range turf with 30–35mm pile height, C-shape or S-shape blade, and polyurethane backing delivers the best balance of realism, durability, and margin. Avoid latex-backed products for permanent installs — they degrade faster in Queensland heat.

Recommended spec: 30–35mm pile | Polyurethane backing | Multi-tone blade | UV-stabilised

Pool Surrounds

Pool surrounds require excellent drainage and a non-slip surface. Choose a turf with perforated backing and a shorter pile (25–30mm) for easier maintenance and faster drying. Confirm slip resistance rating with your certifier if required.

Recommended spec: 25–30mm pile | Perforated PU backing | Shorter, denser blade | Drainage rate: 30+ L/m²/hr

Balconies & Rooftop Terraces

Weight and drainage are critical on elevated surfaces. Use a lighter-weight turf with high drainage capacity. Ensure the substrate has adequate fall and drainage outlets before laying. Adhesive fixing is typically required rather than pegging.

Recommended spec: Lightweight backing | High drainage | Adhesive-compatible | 25–30mm pile

Commercial & High-Traffic Areas

For commercial installs — childcare centres, sports areas, retail, hospitality — specify a high-density turf with a robust backing and infill system. Rubber crumb or sand infill is recommended for high-traffic zones to maintain blade upright and cushioning.

Recommended spec: High stitch rate | 35–40mm pile | Rubber crumb infill | Heavy-duty PU backing

Quantity Calculator for Installers

Use this formula to calculate supply quantities accurately:

  1. Measure the area in metres (length x width)
  2. Account for roll width — THQ turf is available in 3.75m and 4m widths. Plan your cuts to minimise joins and wastage.
  3. Add 10–15% for wastage on irregular shapes, joins, and perimeter cuts
  4. Plan join direction — all joins must run in the same pile direction. Joins against the light source are less visible.
  5. Calculate infill — typically 3–5kg of sand per m² for residential; 5–8kg for commercial with rubber crumb

Installation Best Practice

Base Preparation

  • Excavate to 80–100mm depth for residential installs
  • Compact subbase — road base or crusher dust at 50–70mm compacted depth
  • Lay weedmat over compacted base before turf (THQ stocks weedmat)
  • Ensure minimum 1:100 fall for drainage

Turf Laying

  • Allow turf to acclimatise for 1–2 hours before cutting, especially in hot weather
  • Lay all pieces in the same pile direction — check pile direction by running your hand across the surface
  • Use a sharp Stanley knife or turf cutter for clean edges
  • Joins: butt edges tightly, use joining tape and adhesive underneath, avoid overlapping
  • Secure perimeter with galvanised nails or U-pins at 150–200mm centres (THQ stocks metal nails and U-nails)
  • For adhesive fixing (balconies, concrete): use Liquid Nails or equivalent construction adhesive (THQ stocks Liquid Nails)

Infill Application

  • Apply kiln-dried sand infill evenly using a drop spreader or by hand
  • Brush infill into the pile using a stiff broom or power brush
  • For rubber crumb: apply after sand layer, brush in thoroughly
  • Do not over-infill — leave top 10–15mm of blade exposed
